BLOSSOMS OF THE SAVANNAH; THE
SYNOPSIS
Blossoms of
the Savannah captures the captivating story of Ole Kaelo and his family, which comprises
the wife; Jane Milanoi, and the two daughters; Taiyo and Resian. The story
begins with the retrenchment of Ole Kaelo who has been working for Agribix
Limited as the commercial manager. The retrenchment forces the family to move
from the town of Nakuru where they have been living, to the rural village of
Nasila, their ancestral home. Though Kaelo has prepared well for life in Nasila
by building a home and establishing an agricultural inputs shop, his two
daughters, Resian and Taiyo, who have been living in Nakuru all their lives
find it difficult to adapt to life in the rural home. They find the environment
hostile after being accosted by a vagabond barely a day after arriving there.
The cultural practices also pose a threat to the girls, especially the female
genital mutilation that is considered a basic cultural rite of passage for
girls in Nasila. The girls also fear their father who always seems hostile to
them. Resian in particular is the target of her father’s hate because he had
expected a son as a second born. The sight of Resian reminded him of that
disappointment. She therefore avoids contact with her father as much as she
can. Taiyo on the other hand is her parents’ pride. They consider her the ideal
Nasila woman. This is ironic because Taiyo has fallen in love with Joseph
Parmuat, someone who is considered her brother culturally since they belong to
the same clan. The girls’ dream to join the university is curtailed by their
father who entangles himself in fraudulent deals with a corrupt man,
Oloisudori. This gets him into serious trouble as he is blackmailed into
offering Resian to Oloisudori as a wife or risk losing his fraudulently
acquired wealth. Resian passionately fights the forced marriage as Oloisudori
is her father’s age and she never loved him. She also wants to continue with
her education. She resorts to running away from home. With the absence of
Resian, Oloisudori shifts focus to Taiyo and entices her into the village of
Esoit where she forcefully goes through the process of female genital
mutilation. Though the girls face lots of challenges, they eventually become
victorious. Resian is rescued by a nurse, Nabaru, from the hands of the rogue
Olarinkoi who almost manages to rape her at Inkiito. She takes her to her role
model, Minik ene Nkoitoi who is also known as Emakererei. The Emakererei has
been devoting her life to stopping the barbaric acts of female genital
mutilation and forced marriages that are having toil on girls in Nasila. She
sends a team that manages to rescue Taiyo from Oloisudori’s morans. Resian and
Taiyo are reunited at Minik’s ranch in an emotional moment of victory. The
ranch becomes their safe haven and they brand it their nirvana. An attempt by
Oloisudori to take the girls from the Ntare Naaju ranch is met with great
resistance and is thwarted by Minik’s team. Oloisudori and his men are
seriously clobbered and retreat into a run to save their lives. The climax of the
girls’ victory is achieved when their dream of joining Egerton University
becomes a reality. They become the true blossoms of the Savannah having conquered
hardships against all odds to become victorious.
